Tune well the engine

By tuning the engine well, we actually mean that as a driver, know when to press hard the accelerator pedal and when to gently press. For better fuel economy, it’s best that you gently press on the accelerator pedal.

A gentle press can be monitored in the speedometer, where by you can see that the RPM gauge doesn’t go above 2000 rpm, or above the number 2 mark whenever you hit the gas.

Lighten up the cabin

While embarking on your self drive Uganda trips, we recommend you not to stack so many cargo in the cabin, or travel with very many people above the cars’ max seating capacity.

A light load on the engine implies that the engine shall apply less effort on movement, thus low fuel combustion. Whereas a heavy load on the engine implies that the engine shall apply more effort on movement, thus high fuel consumption.

Switch engine off when stationary

When you park for more than 5 minutes, its best that you switch off the engine. Remember that every time the engine is on, combustion begins. To save fuel you ought to switch off the engine when stationary.

Have the right tire inflation pressure

Before embarking on your self drive Uganda safaris with your travel buddies, ensure that the car Tyres are well inflated at the right pressure.

Tyres with less pressure make movement hard making the engine work hard on pulling the load, thus high fuel consumption, whereas tyres with the right pressure make movement easy making the engine work optimally, thus good fuel economy.

Drive in high gears

Driving in low gears especially 1 and 2 increases fuel consumption compared to driving in the third, fourth or fifth gears.

The first and second gears are relatively the strongest gears, which require relatively stronger engine performance. This makes the engine combust more fuel for better performance as compared to the fourth or fifth or sixth gear.

Avoid driving in heavy traffic

Heavy traffic is associated with driving in mainly the first and second gears. These are gears that are very strong and make the engine burn more fuel. We recommend you to look out for routes that do not have too much traffic as you organize your self drive Uganda road trips.
